Coach Motivational Strategies for Enhancing Quality Relationships with Athletes
Tuesday 26 August 2025 | 19:00 - 20:30 (UK time)
Quality coach-athlete relationship is a performance factor. Quality relationships between coaches and athletes can also impact athletes’ and coaches’ wellbeing in positive ways. Coaches are the best placed to create motivational environments to enhance good quality relationships with the athletes. By developing task-related climates (as opposed to ego-related climates) and by encouraging athletes’ autonomy (as opposed to controlling and intimidating athletes), coaches foster motivational environments that encompass support, appreciation, open channels of communication and listening. Research has found that such motivational environments build trust and respect, as well as commitment and collaboration between coaches and athletes . This session focusses on offering ideas of how coaches can create motivational environments to enhance quality relationships with each athlete in the group, team or squad.

This session explores the ways in which athletes’ and coaches’ characteristics such as personality traits (e.g., extraversion, introversion) and individual orientations (e.g., attachment styles, passion for sport) affect the quality of the coach-athlete relationship. Based on published research, this session aims to raise knowledge and awareness and at the same time initiate a conversation about how results from this research can be readily used to impact positively coaching practices. It aims to help coaches, athletes and other practitioners (e.g., sport psychologists, coach developers, performance directors) to understand that while personality-related aspects have been found to affect the effectiveness of the coach-athlete relationship (positively and negatively), interpersonal communication can be instrumental in mitigating the negative effects of personality and in enhancing the positive effects of personality in the development of relationships that really work.
