THE HUMAN EDGE
Mastering Quality Relationships in the AI Era
By Dr Sophia Jowett | Routledge | Forthcoming in 2027
What if one of the most important capabilities of our lives is one we have never properly learned?
We learn to think. We learn to work. We learn to lead, communicate and solve problems.
But how much do we really learn about creating relationships that bring out the best in ourselves and others?
Our relationships influence who we become, what we believe is possible, how we navigate adversity and what we can achieve together. They can give us confidence, belonging, purpose and a sense of possibility. They can also undermine us, hold us back and leave us feeling misunderstood or alone.
Yet we often take relationships for granted. We expect them to work without fully understanding what makes them work well.
It is time to change that.
The Human Edge: Mastering Quality Relationships in the AI Era explores a question with implications for our personal lives, our workplaces and our collective future:
What makes a relationship good—and how can we become better at creating one?
Drawing on nearly three decades of research, Dr Sophia Jowett reveals how the quality of our relationships shapes the way we live, learn, lead, work and flourish. She introduces a research-grounded framework for understanding relationship quality and explores how we can develop the capabilities needed to build relationships that are not only productive, but also meaningful, supportive and rewarding.
And as artificial intelligence increasingly changes what machines can do, the question becomes even more urgent:
What will give us our human edge?
Perhaps it is not simply what we know, how intelligent we are or what we can accomplish individually. Perhaps it is also what we are able to create between us.
A different way of seeing relationships
Relationships are not simply the setting in which life happens. They help shape the life we experience.
The quality of a relationship is more than the sum of two individuals' qualities. It emerges through the way people understand one another, respond to one another, navigate differences and continually shape their experience together.
This means relationship quality is not merely something we hope for or something we are lucky to find. It is something we can learn to understand, nurture and develop.
In this book, you will discover how to look beyond personality, individual ability and communication techniques to understand the relationship itself—and the possibilities it creates.
This book is for you if…
You want to understand the people who matter to you—and help your relationships become stronger.
You lead people and want to create environments where trust, collaboration and achievement can flourish.
You teach, coach or mentor and recognise that the relationship is not incidental to development; it is part of what makes development possible.
You work in a team or organisation and want to understand why some working relationships unlock potential while others constrain it.
Or you are simply curious about human nature and want to understand more deeply how we influence one another and become who we are through our relationships.
You do not need a background in psychology. The research is the foundation, but the questions belong to all of us.
What you will discover
The science of relationship quality: What distinguishes relationships that help people thrive from those that leave them struggling?
The power of the 3+1Cs: How closeness, commitment, complementarity and co-orientation help explain the quality of a relationship.
Relational Intelligence: Why understanding and developing the relationship itself is an essential human capability.
The art of navigating differences: How to balance closeness with personal boundaries, commitment with autonomy, and cooperation with questions of power.
Relationships and human flourishing: How the quality of our connections can shape our experiences, opportunities and potential.
The human edge in the age of AI: Why our ability to build meaningful, high-quality relationships deserves renewed attention in an increasingly technological world.
Beyond Getting Along & Why Now?
Beyond Getting Along & Why Now?
Beyond getting along
High-quality relationships are not relationships without disagreement, tension or difficulty. Nor do they require two people to think, feel or behave in the same way.
The real challenge is learning how to build relationships that can accommodate difference, withstand difficulty and enable both people to contribute, develop and flourish.
This is not about becoming universally liked or making every interaction comfortable. It is about understanding what makes a relationship work well—and what each of us can do to help create one.
Why now?
Artificial intelligence is transforming how we access knowledge, communicate and work. As machines become increasingly capable, we have an opportunity to reconsider what matters most about being human.
Technology may extend what we can do individually. But our lives are also shaped by what we can understand, create and accomplish together.
The human edge lies not only in the intelligence we possess individually, but also in the intelligence we create between us.
